CASE STUDY

Push Based Application

This is a case study for a leading FMCG Company based out of Mumbai in India.

Background

The company is one of the industry leaders in FMCG goods in their categories. The company is one of the leaders in technology adoption. It run on SAP ERP on the backend which is supported by APO SCM solutions. The company has a web based system which connects directly to its Distributors and Branch Offices across the country. This application is also integrated to SAP at the backend.

The Problem

The company wanted to convey information to its distributed workforce on a real time basis on a channel other than web. They also wanted some alerts like server downtime on a real time basis. There is also a problem of connectivity and performance for web based applications in remote areas. The company then actively looked at mobile phones as enablers for this set of information.

The Solution

DNS IT Services Pvt. Ltd. developed an application which resides in the secure network of the company. The solution is a web based interface screens built in with predefined queries for the customers apart from a simple send screen. Following are the solution categories for the company:

A. Single SMS Send Screen
B. Query SMS Send Screen
C. Alerts

A. Web Based Single SMS Send Screen

  • From and To mobile numbers – The user can enter multiple recipient mobile numbers through comma separated values
  • Mailing list – The user can select a group of users or users across multiple groups through the mailing list feature
  • The length of the message is limited to 160 characters.
  • This screen can be exposed to responsible people in the organization for even sending one on one message for corporate use. The user can type and send the message through the computer rather than on the mobile phone.

B. Web based Query Send Screen
DNS IT Services Pvt. Ltd. has developed pre defined queries for the customer. The customers simply logs on to the web page and clicks on the recipients for the query from the mailing list feature. A customized message is created with the name of the owner of that particular mobile no/no’s and the message is sent. Then he clicks on the predefined query button and the data is sent to the recipients instantaneously.

C. Alerts

The solution is integrated to the backend systems. It is configured to send SMS alerts (eg. Server or transaction) to respective mobile numbers on occurrence of the event.

Technology

ASP 3.0 With SQL SERVER 2000 as Backend

Protocol: HTTP

The Flow

The user submits the message on their screen. The message travels to the DNS IT Services Pvt. Ltd.s SMS Server where the user is validated with the userid and password. On successful authentication the message hits the Operator port and is sent to the mobile nos as specified in the “To” field. The user who receives the message sees the number of the “From” field as entered by the sender. Protocol used in sending of the message is HTTP.

Response Time The main advantage of using this push-based application apart from the simple user interface is the response time. Since DNS It Services Pvt Ltds Server uses a dedicated port with the operator the response time is much faster as compared to the GSM based modems.
